NELSON BRANCH NEW PRESIDENT ELECTED At the last meeting of the year there was a very good attendance cf members of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Miss Cooke gave the devotional address. Her subject ior the closing of the year’s work was helpful and encouraging to members. Both Mrs Kiiby and Mrs Watson gave Temperance Facts. The special contribution from members and friends towards the Maori Girls’ Hostel brought in over £5. Later anothc ■ member donated a further £5. During the afternoon all superintendents gave the: annual reports, and the secretary, M: Toomer, gave a comprehensive report on the union’s work during the year. Mrs Andrew: presented the balance sheet. Miss Cooke thanked all the union officers fur the work they I accomplished during the year Speaking about 1 .• • ■ i parade which had been held, Miss Cooke thanked the members for their attendance. Despite the bad weather members had turned out splendidly and the secretary was asked to send a letter of appreciation to the Rev. E. Goring, of the Baptist Church, for his very cordial welcome and his inspirini and forceful address. PRESIDE ,'T’S RESIGN DION Miss Cooke, who has be. t; president of the Nelson bran ’i for ovei 21 years, tendered her resignation which was accepted with regret. Miss Cooke thankee 1 the members for their loyalty to her and to the union. While holding the office she had had many happy experiences, and she hoped that her successor would receive the same loyal co-opera-tion that members had always extended to her. Mrs Walker, district president, presented Miss Cooke with a beautiful bouquet made by Mrs Nelson Andrews, and a book from the members. Mrs Robinson paid a tribute to Miss Cooke’s work, saying she was sure Miss Cooke had made the Women’s Christian Temperance Union her chief avenue for Christian service. ELECTION OF OFFICERS The follow 1 - officers were elected: President, Mrs Toomer; secretary, Mrs Sixtus; treasurer, Mrs Andrews. All (he superintendents were re-elected. Mrs Toomer thanked the members for the honour conferred on her and thanked Miss Cooke for turning her first from a raw recruit into the secretary and now into a president.
