GANDHI TO RESIGN
INDIAN CONGRESS LOSES LEADER WILL CONTINUE PACIFIST DOCTRINE London, Dec., 30. Mahatma Gandhi is resigning the leadership of the Indian National Congress, says the Bombay correspondent of the “Daily Herald.” He adds that this sensational step follows five days of conferences with the other leaders and the Congress Working Committee. His insistence on a full pacifist doctrine and his determination to continue civil disobedience proved stumbling blocks in defining the Congress policy toward the w’ar. Gandhi himself proposes to continue pacifist opposition to the war. The Congress Working Committee is reported to have evolved a formula j permitting the resumption of negotiations with Britain regarding the cooperation of Congress in the war effort including the possibility of a National Coalition Government for the duration. Congress nevertheless does not abate its demands for Indian independence.— u.r.A.
