ADEQUACY AFTER TWO YEARS STATEMENT BY LORD WOOLTON <Rcc. 11.10 a.m.) Rugby, Oet. 28. ; The adequacy ol’ British food supplies after two years of war was revealed in a statement by the Minister i of Food. Lord Woolton, who said: “We | have during this last year had a diet ! which though dull was sufficient. We have been trying at the Ministry to secure that during this it should a main sufficient, but have an added variety from time to time. For example we have been able to obtain a ! quantity of suet in block form. For j one week only I—l2th to B—l2th of the public will be able to get not only their i ration but in addition a two ounce ; block of suet per ration book. Thirty thousand cases of eating i apples arrived from Canada and a few j more are coming. We shall apply I legion;.l distribution and they will be i available immediately at , controlled I prices. South African oranges are coming in and will be distributed as they j are now. We have a reasonable quantity of dried fruit which I hope will be | able to add a little to the life of the ration’s diet. This dried fruit is being allocated on the sugar ration and will ensure the nation of wide distribution. SUGAR FOR RUSSIA * Lord Woolton also mentioned that within a few hours of his return from Moscow Lord Beaverbrook told him i that sugar might be wanted for Russia. ; "I sent a letter to him before noon on j I that Saturday morning and told him | that I was arranging for the allocation ef sugar to be made immediately to I Russia from our own stocks." —8.0.
