A NELSON CHRONOLOGY | 29th October, 1841: j Observed this morning the water very ; much discoloured owing to the heavy ! rain of yesterday. Calm and fine. At 9 the Arrow weighed and ran j down to the Kaitiriiiri and anchored] outside the cove in order to receive the Chiefs. At 11 went down with all surveyors j then on board and the masters of the | ships. At 12 the Chiefs came on board— ] Charlie or Etui. Ewaku, Epo, Eporewa, j and Etongo. Epiko, Emanu and Erie. ] were not present although included in j the number. I told them I should j [ give them a present upon settling on j the land called the Taitap. although it! had been purchased by Colonel Wake- j [ field from Te Raupero and Hiko two j years ago. They said Te Raupero had | never given them any of the trade and ! | that they therefore had nothing to do 1 with the sale. Upon my saying 1 1 : should give them a present equal to I their proportion of what they ought to have received from Te Raupero. they i I said that was very well, although they ] I did not like to talk about Te Raupero’s j i having sold their land without giving ! j them a share. When I named the i i articles they were perfectly satisfied i [ and went away quite pleased upon my I I giving to each of the twelve, notes fori ] the articles, viz... 10 blankets. 2 axes. 1 i I double-barrelled gun, 121 b of powder. I ! lewt of tobacco. 1 cwt biscuit, and 300 | ' pipes. Epiko’s absence arose from a feud i ; between him and one of the other ! . Chiefs.
