ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO TO-DAY

\ NELSON CHRONOLOGY 25th OCTOBER. 1841 : l lr. the morning proceeded in tbe Deal boat to examine the Bay. Found i a snug creek from three to four miles ! in length and half a mile wide run- ! ning in a E.N.E direction perfectly ! sheltered - with 7 and 8 fathoms in midchannel with steep shores. The land is remarkably steep; in fact, there did not appear to be 10 acres of available land on the shore of this creek and ; bay I ascertained clearly that there was no possibility of any eommunica- ■ tion being opened up to the southward. Found an island inside Ihe two laid down on Wyld's chart, about a mile • from the other two. The anchorage j under the Ice of these islands is good and the ground tough. —Captain Wakefield's Diary | 26th OCTOBER, 1841: i Weighed and stood out —rounded Cape Soueis and steered along the shore S.W. about seven miles. Left the boat I and went into Wakapu-vvaka. a pah i behind Pepin’s Island. I found the ! channel round the island nearly dry at low water, the land in the neighbourhood forming a very pretty spot, land amounting to several hundred acres of available land. C’ame out again and rounded Pepin's Island, and ran down following the brig to the Waikatu. The brig stood a 1 ittle far down and touched the shore on the flat between the Waikatu and the Waimea. but she made sail and hauled out and stood over to Astrolabe Roads. I went into the Waikatu in the boat, where I picked up Messrs Brown and Moore, who had returned from their trip from the southward, giving a very favourable account of a large district of good land between the mouth of the Waikatu and the opening into the back country. Returned to the ship. —Captain. Wakefield's Diary.
