INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION SOME FIGURES FOR 1940 1 Expansion in New Zealand industries ! associated with the war effort is refiecti ed in figures given in the latest "Ab- ; stract of Statistics.” In woollen-milling the advances made in 1939-40 were increased in 1940-41. I New record high levels were attained ! for the number of persons engaged, [salaries and wages paid, and the quan- ! turn and value of output. In the boot and shoe industry factories were working at high pressure. Almost 5,000.000 pairs of boots, shoes, ! slippers and sandals were produced in 1940-41. which is 850,000 more than in : the previous year. The number of | persons engaged in this industry was 18 per cent, greater than in the previous {year while wages and salaries paid recorded an increase of 25 per cent. Imports of footwear fell by over 60 per cent. Beer and stout brewed in 1940-41 reached the record high level of 19.120,241 gallons, an increase of 7 per cent, over production for the previous year. Brisk conditions obtained in the superphosphates and chemical fertilisers industry during 1940-41 culminating in new record high levels of production. In the grain-milling industry small increases were recorded.
