The number of | persons engaged in this industry was 18 per cent, greater than in the previous {year while wages and salaries paid recorded an increase of 25 per cent. Imports of footwear fell by over 60 per cent. Beer and stout brewed in 1940-41 reached the record high level of 19.120,241 gallons, an increase of 7 per cent, over production for the previous year. Brisk conditions obtained in the superphosphates and chemical fertilisers industry during 1940-41 culminating in new record high levels of production. In the grain-milling industry small increases were recorded.
