“THE VIENNA CHILD”

During the years of famine after the last war Austria appealed to Norway. “Look after our children or they will starve.” Warmhearted Norwegians adopted Austrian children for years; fed and clothed them and sent them to school with their own children. They grew to love them as if they belonged to their own family, and they v ere brokenhearted when the “Vienna Children” returned to their homeland. In this war, when Germany invaded helpless Norway, Austrian troops were in the van of the advancing army. Many of those Austrian soldiers had been “Vienna Children." who, perhaps, would have died in childhood but for the- loving care of the Norwegians. This was how Hitler used them to repay the kindness of their foster-parents. Christine Kossen has written a radio play on the theme.
