LONG CYCLE RACE

WAIMATE TO CHRISTCHURCH Christchurch, Oct. 12. The annual cycle race from Waimate to Christchurch yesterday was won by C.Skiffington, oft’ the 45-minute mark. Fastest time went to the 19-year-old Christchurch rider. C. R. Evans, who sprinted pluckily over the last quartermile of the 135-mile journey. Evans’s time was for the shortened course, which now runs through the Rangitata diversion, cutting oft ten miles. Skiffington, an Aucklander, who has been in Christchurch only a few months, had not started in the race before. Evans, who will be 20 this week, had not previously started in a race of more than 50 miles. Placings were:—C. Skiftington (45 min), Ghr 27min 56sec; L. Young (45 min), 6hr 28min 30sec; T. V. Niven, Waimate (40min>, 6hr 24min sGscc; A. Porter (15min), Ghr Omin 3sec. Fastest times: C. R. Evans, shr 53min ssec; J. H. Newlove, shr 53min 5 l-ssec; I. Sutherland, shr 54min 23secs. —P.A.
