THE HOME FRONT

BATTLE OF THE FLAMES WARNING AGAINST FURTHER AIR RAIDS (Rec. 10.55 a.m.) Rugby, Sept. 14. „ A description was given by the Home Secretary in a broadcast talk of the improved fire fighting measures in Britain. Emphasising the need for them Mr Herbert Morrison said: “This lull in the heavy and widspread air attack o.i our island reminds me of the first seven months of the war, when we landsmen did not know we were fighting at ah. In a few months’ time we shall be looking back on to-day with the same sense of its unreality'as we did in the middle of the blitz last winter. when we looked back to the incredible doldrums of the year before. Soon —we do not know how soon—big enemy bomber fleets will come over again and high explosive bombs will burst and incendiaries flash and flame. The Nazis will make their inevitable a tempt to ruin our homes and cities and burn and destroy on land the weapons, food and raw materials they are now finding it harder and harder to destroy at sea The battle of the flames will be again among the first and foremost issues on the home front. “Remember, however, the fires of battle rage in Europe, Asia, Africa and on the seven seas, nowhere will the fight be found more essential to victory than that fight in our streets and buildings —a fight to protect and keep secure the Empire’s base without which the liberties of the world arc lost.’’—B.O.W.
