; ASSISTANCE TO RETURNED j SOLDIERS Christchurch, Sept. 13. j A statement on the probable method | to be adopted in the Government I lurniture loan plans for soldiers has been made by the assistant-secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation, Mr R. Wilson, in reply to an inquiry by the secretary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. Mr R. T. Alston. Mr Alston asked for a statement on j how the loans were to be operated, | and whether furniture manufactuprers ! themselves would have the opporj t unity of participating in the scheme or i;' the loans were to be issued to specified retailers. From discussion with administrative I officials, Mr Wilson said, it appeared that the method to be adopted would i be that where a returned soldier was j in need of furniture, he would, after | j application to the State Advances Cor- | i poration, be empowered to choose furI niture to the value of the loan contem- ; plated. Some form of inspection would be carried out by the corporation to ensure that the soldier was getting full value for the money, and the . account would finally be paid by the corporation. This was actually tentai live, Mr Wilson said, because the methods to be adopted hud not yet been made final. ' What appeared an important aspect, ; he added, was the ensuring of sufficient supplies of raw material to undertake the production which might be necessary. lie had therefore taken up the whole question with Mr Nash to obtain particulars of the scheme, and also to | ensure that provision was made for the law materials needed. —P.A.
