LONDON SCIENCE CONGRESS
DIFFICULTIES OF TRANSPORT | RECORDS TO BE MADE OF PAPERS Rugby, Sept. 11. ! Scientists from all parts of the world —22 nationalities in all—will meet ; from 2fith to 28th September at the Royal Institution London, to contribute 1 to a conference which aims at linking i up science with government for the bet- 1 terment of human life. Since Herr Hitler came to power and until 1937 the number of entries into I German Universities dropped by half. Thus, despite nil the real uses to which ! Herr Hitler and his advisers have put j science, the Nazis are living on their ' scientific capital. On the other hand, as explained by Professor Sir Richard Gregory, presi 1 dent of the British Association, the Allies have the co-operation of scientists from all free countries in what is j a great democratic commonwealth of science. Sir Richard urged the necessity for those in control of public affairs to tin- ; derstand the power which science places in the hands of mankind for construction and human betterment. When such knowledge was in the hands of gangsters they could hold up peaceful communities by their thousands and millions. The conference, which is being held under the auspices of the British Association. aims at better relations be-! tween science and government—administration and other agencies concerned in constructive planning for the pro- : sent and the future. Its spirit is the . same as that of the momentous AngloAmerican statement of peace aims drawn up by President Roosevelt and | ! Mr Churchill. Those scientists who. because of difli- 1 culties of transport in wartime, will 1 not be able to make contributions per- ’* sonally, are recording their papers and!* their voices will be heard in London. : Professor Einstein, in exile from Germany. is making a record in America J on the common language of science 1 and prominent Indian scientists will 1 probably record speeches. ’
