BOROUGH AFFAIRS MONTHLY MEETING OK COUNCIL RUBBISH SERVICE TO BE ’ INAUGURATED The monthly meeting of the Motueka Borough Council was attended by the Mayor, Mr W. J. Eginton. and Council lors A. E. Fry. 11. Whitwell. H. D. Bennett. A. F. Wcbley, H. R. McClnshcn and T. Hiekmolt. The Finance Committee's report, which was dealt with in committee.) engaged the council's attention for the | major portion of the evening. RUBBISH SERVICE The Works Committee submitted the j following recommendations in respect 1 to the establishment of a monthly rub bish service within the borough, and these were approved. 1. That a monthly rubbish service for the collection of indestructible rubbish be introduced as from Ist October. It is proposed that the service shall be free to those at present served with i the sanitation service and to finance the | scheme a charge of 5s per year will be 1 made to those having septic tanks. Next year if the set ice meets the demand it is expected to, the charge will be made by way of rate, but for the remainder of the year a charge of 2s (d per septic tank will be made payable in advance and service will not be given until the amount is paid. Householders will be required to provide their own receptacles, which must Lp placed at their gate on the day of the service. If they are not there, the rubbish will be left. The following rubbish will not be collected: Trade refuse, perishable or destructible matter. The committee is satisfied that the proposed service can be done without any undue interfering with the present duties of the sanitation employee. Further it will remove a longstanding complaint of this rubbish being placed in the sanitation pans and should be conducive to a tidier town. The borough has been divided into four rounds as against five with the sanitation service, and collection will be made as follows: —Ist Friday of the . month—Poole street, Atkins street, ! Green Lane. Victoria street, and Wha- ! karewa street; 2nd Friday of the month ! —Pah street, Queen Victoria Street j ! South, King Edward street; 3rd Friday | of the month—Thorp street. Greenwood 1 street. High street North, Parker street, j and Fearon street; 4th Friday of the month—Tudor street. High street and ' Courtenay street. On months when 1 there are five Fridays no collection will be made on the fifth Friday. 2. The committee cannot recommend the installation of conveniences at the | ■ Post Office corner as suggested by Mr j A. L. Vickerman, but suggests that ■ suitable signs be erected indicating the existing public conveniences in the j borough. The Mayor said he was very pleased ! that the Works Committee had seen fit to make recommendations in regard to a rubbish service which he felt sure would be appreciated by all householders. CLOSING HOURS FOR READING ROOM AND REST-ROOM The question of closing the reading room at an earlier hour in the evenings during the week and not to open on Sundays was discussed at length. It was contended that this public facility was very little used between the hours of 9 and 10 p.m., and that few took advantage of the reading room on Sundays. It was resolved that the reading room in future be closed at 9.30 p.m. on week days and all day on Sundays. In respect to the Rest Room, it was decided that it be closed at 9.30 p.m. i or- week days and at G p.m. on Sun- ' clays. MEMORIAL TO CAPTAIN i WAKEFIELD The Mayor reported that the special , committee set up had gone into the matter of a suitable method of commemorating the 100th anniversary of the landing of Captain Wakefield and his party in the Motueka district. Cer- , tain recommendations had been brought down in regard to erecting a fountain at the spring at Kaiteriteri , where Captain Wakefield first obtained fresh water. These recommendations had been submitted to a confer- l cnee of representatives of the Waimea ! County Council, Motueka Harbour Board, Kaiteriteri Domain Board, and the Borough Council, and subsequently : approved. Councillor Fry, chairman of the ! Works Committee, said his committee i wished to know the council’s intentions j in regard to the unfinished footpath in ; King Edward street. He had been j questioned on the matter by residents, ! and would like the council to give its j definite instructions. After the position had been reviewed it was decided on the motion of the Mayor and Councillor Hickmott that j no action be taken in the meantime in respect to completing the formation 1 and sealing of the footpath in King Edward street in view of th: fact that: the footpath loan monies had been expended and on account of the increased cost of materials. On the motion of the Mayor and ' Councillor Fry the Town Clerk was instructed to forward a letter to the borough foreman. M.- W. Anderson, expressing the council's sympathy in his illness and the hope for a speedy ! recovery.
