TERRIFIC EXPLOSION
FIRE ON BROOKLYN WATERFRONT
PIER USED BY BRITISH SHIPS DESTROYED SEIZED ITALIAN VESSEL ALSO LOST HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE FEARED I ißec. 2.15 p.m.) New York. Aug. 18. A terrific explosion tom bed off a raging fire on the Brooklyn waterfront to-day, destroying a thousand foot pier used by British ships to load supplies and the Italian ship Panuco, which the Mexican Government seized. Four men are known to have been killed and it is feared many more lost their lives in the ship and under the pier. Fifty-live men were inju r ed, seven critically. Fireboats. police launches and coastguard cutters rescued twenty-eight survivors from the water. Two longshoremen were drowned when they umped from the Panuco. which was on fire from stem to stern and drifted down the bay. The ship was eventually beached. It is feared rnanv of the victims are aboard the vessel. Fireboats, 26 fire brigades, and 300 firemen fought the fire, which destroyed much valuable property. Numerous explosions occurred while the fire raged. The authorities have begun to search for evidence of sabotage.
