SHEARERS’ HOURS AND PAY
INCREASED THIS SEASON Christchurch, Aug., 13. Shearers’ hours have been increased for this season to meet the position i arising from the shortage of shearers. ! states the annual report of the Canterbury Sheepowners’ Union. The rate jfor shearers has been increased by 6d !a hundred, and the wages of shecl- | hands have been increased by Is 6d ! weekly, or J>d an hour. The report (states that the union reached an I agreement with the New Zealand Workers’ Union for an increase in |h' L.rs from 44 a week to 48 hours 20 [minutes, and also for an extension of I the cut-out period when shearing wet jewes from 15 to 30 minutes when the time is required to complete the cutout. j "This extension to meet war requirements will be much appreciated by (members,” the report states,” and it lis hoped that it will be possible for I this extension to be made to apply throughout the whole of the war period.” The report records the union’s thanks to Mr Webb .nd to the Workers’ Union representatives for their co-operative spirit.—P.A.
