UNITS AT WORK IN VARIOUS DISTRICTS Hastings, Aug. 4. An assurance to stone fruit growers that the question of stone fruit research had not been lost sight of was given by the president. Mr J. H. Milne, at the annual meeting of the Hawkes Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association. As this branch of the industry was likely to become more important in view of the requirements of the canning trade, and .in view of the suitability of Hawkes Bay for stone fruit production, the j need for research work was urge fit. Because of want of space, the experimental orchard at Havelock North was not suitable for this purpose. However, i this orchard was only one unit in the i .fruit research work of the Dominion,! . and each unit, was making its contribution in u way most suited to the locality in which it was situated. Auckland was made the main centre for investigation into stone fruit disease, an area of three acres having been planted for the purpose. This orchard had now reached the bearing stage, and work on brown rot would be conducted in the initial stages, and later the experiments would be transferred to other localities •as tangible results were obtained. In adopting this course, an aiea of peaches would be secured in Hawkes : Bay. and any experiments that showed ’ promise in Auckland, would be tried out
