PATROLS NEARING BEIRUT

COUNTER-ATTACKS REPULSED <Rec. 9.40 p.m.) Rugby, June 18. A communique issued from British Headquarters at Cairo states:— “Further progress has been made in the coastal sector of Syrja, where our advanced patrols are now within 20 miles of Beirut. South of Damascus the Allied forces made further headway in face of strong opposition by Vichy troops. In the central area heavy coun-ter-attacks by our forces are in progress against Vichy elements, which temporarily effected lodgments in Merj Iyun and Quneitra.
