TOBACCO INVESTIGATION

SPECIAL COMMITTEE IN NELSON DISTRICT INCREASING PRODUCTION To further the Government’s aim to increase tobacco production in New Zealand a Special Tobacco Investigation Committee is discussing matters ; connected with the industry with meetings of tobacco growers. The committee is composed of Messrs C. S. Sapsford (Department of Industries and Commerce) chairman, N. J. Adamson (Department of Agriculture), L. R. James (State Placement Service), |J. O. Williams (Labour Department), ' and L. G. Rimmer (secretary). The committee is making an investigation of the industry from the growers’ point of view, and is attending ward meetings and special meetings in the district. Matters which they wish discussed and want to hear growers’ opinions on are, increasing the production of tobacco from the point of view of acreage available, and the possibility of increasing the acreage, the question of wages, and accommodation for workers, costs of production, and any other relevant matters. Individual growers are also being interviewed as far as possible in the limited time, the committee being in the district for two or three weeks.
