FIERCE ENCOUNTER

WESTERN DESERT OPERATIONS TANKS AND ARMOURED CARS USED (Rec.. 9.25 a.m.) Cairo, June 17. While military circles do not admit that the present fighting in the Western Deser' is the beginning of a large-scale British offensive, newspaper correspondents emphasise it is clearly very different from the recent spasmodic activity. Both sides this time arc flinging tanks and armoured cars into the battle. Both sides appear strongly supported by aircraft. The fiercest encounters are occurring on the top of the Solium escarpment at a point just inside Egypt from Libya.—U.P.A.
