FIGHTING IN CRETE

STILL FAIRLY STRENUOUS NAVAL LANDINGS NOT ATTEMPTED BRITISH NAVY PARTICIPATING [U.P.A.-By Electric Telegraph-Copyright] (Rec. 1.55 p.m.) London, May 21. Military circles in Cairo late to-night said that fairly strenuous fighting is still going on in Crete. It is learned in London that Germans did not attempt naval landings but attempted a landing from small boats. Places where such landings were possible are well-known by the British who have been there for months, and to the Greek command, making successful landings on any large scale most hazardous. German reports suggest that strong British naval forces are active in the eastern Mediterranean. The German radio claimed that bombers directly hit a battleship, five cruisers and a destroyer west of Crete.
