l EFFORT TO ESTABLISH IN NELSON 1 , | An effort is being made by the Nelt ; son Acclimatisation Society to establish I I Canadian mallard ducks in the Nelson , district. The annual report of the society ? states:— l* “Owing to the generosity of Mr C. % A. Whitney, of Auckland, a number of f sittings of eggs were supplied to this t society for hatching purposes, and alls though a number of eggs failed to hatch it is pleasing to note that of the ducklings hatched out fully 95 per cent, of the birds have aen reared, a number of which have been liberated in selected localities where they can be protcted and fed. Several pairs have been retained for breeding purposes, while others are being held pending a suitj i i>ble place being found to liberate them. _ It is to be hoped that this fine sporting - bird can be established in this district, -j Forty-five young birds have been rear-
