HISTORIC RED GUM

PRESERVATION ASSURED

The publicity given by the press to the aid sought by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, to save from destruction by erosion an historic red gum tree at Orua Bay. Awhitu, has achieved the desired result states the "Herald.” Mr G. W. Allsop, of Auckland, has informed the chairman of the Franklin County Council, Mr J, N. Massey, that he has purchased several icctions at Orua Bay, including the area on which the red gum tree stands. Mr Allsop is undertaking the erection cjf a retaining wall along the beach ftontage and will replace some 200 yerds of soil washed away from the roots of the tree. iMr Parry said the tree was of historic value. The seed from which it had grown had been brought from Australia in 1836 by the Rev. James Hamlin when he established the mission station at Orua Bay. "The fine public spirit displayed by Mr Allsop,” the Minister added, "in coming to the refcue of the tree merits high commendation.”
