SATURDAY WORK FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS
, PROPOSAL TO BE PUT INTO PRACTICE | UNION SECRETARY OBJECTS Officials of the Manufacturers' Prin- ; cesj Committee in the Wellington Queen ; Carnival Patriotic Campaign intimated ! yesterday that, despite opposition from the Clothing Trades Union, the proposals for Saturday morning work by stalls of manufacturing firms to assist the i patriotic funds were going to be put into practice (states “The Dominion ), i ! The proposals were that stalls should! ; work six Saturday mornings at double 1 rates of pay. it being understood that the wages lor those mornings would be devoted to the patriotic fund. : It was stated that girls controlled; i by the union concerned had held meet- 1 j ings and decided to carry on with the ! ! proposals. They regarded it as their , ! right to do as they liked in the matter, 1 and were enthusiastically supporting . i the Queen Carnival campaign 1 Ii was stated that the girls were making this effort voluntarily as a patriotic effort Their employers could not force them to work if they did not . wish to do so; they controlled their j own destiny, and it was for each firm’s j employees to decide for themselves whether they wisned to contribute in this | way to the success of the campaign. A j great many had decided to do so. | Emphasis was laid on the fact that | the effort was being made by the em- ! ployees themselves, and that all proi ceeds were being contribi ted by the ’ staffs, and not by the firms concerned. Referring to the objections made bv I the Clothing Trades Union, a manuj facturer concerned said that the whole ! correspondence would be placed before the Prime Minister In view of his appeals for harder work and greater production, t was considered shameful that a union secretary should atj tempt to discourage workers and so I hamper the patriotic effort.
