FINE EFFORT

PATRIOTIC APPEAL OUTSTANDING RESULT IN NELSON DOMINION ORGANISER’S COMMENT [United Press Association] WELLINGTON, 12th February. Upon return from Nelson yesterday morning, Mr J. Abel, honorary Dominion organiser of the £1,000,000 All Purposes Patriotic Appeal, reported that he had assisted in the organisation of a radio appeal conducted by the Nelson City Queen Carnival. The queens represented the Army. Navy, and Air Force, and the appeal, which was confined to the city and nearby districts, resulted in the raising of £4212 between 7.45 p.m. and midnight This result, Mr Abel said, was outstanding. The organisation of the appeal had functioned perfectly. Up to 3 p.m. yesterday the three queens had paid in more than £SOOO for the past six weeks. To this had to be added the result of the radio appeal, and it now seemed clear that when the contest ended on Saturday next it would help considerably towards making Nelson Province’s quota of £30,000 secure.

The Mayor of Westport and the representatives of the local patriotic committee had been in Nelson for the week-end and had set themselves the aim of raising £6OOO by a queen carnival. The Buller district was part of the Nelson patriotic province, and when this effort was added to that of Nelson City it would easily fill the provincial quota.
