MAGISTRATE'S COURT

TAKAKA SITTING At -i sitting of the Takaka Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, before Mr T. E. Maunsell. S.M., the police proceeded against eleven first offenders on charges of being found on licensed premises after closing hours. Pleas of guilty were entered in all cases. Two of the accused, who appeared in Court, and another. who was represented by Mr C. W Thorp, were convicted and fined 10s and 10s costs. In the remaining cases fines of £1 and costs were imposed. On a charge of supplying liquor after hours, George H Jeffries, barman at the Telegraph Hotel, Takaka, on whose behalf Mr Thorp entered a plea of guilty, was convicted and fined £3 and costs (10s>. A charge of selling liquor after hours was preferred against G. L. R. Lucre (Mr Thorp), licensee of the Telegraph Hotel. In entering a plea of guilty, counsel submitted that the accused was in Motueka at the time of the offence making preparations for the publican’s booth at the A. and P Show. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £l and costs. Evidence of all of the above offences was given by Constable A. C. Strawbridge. All were in respect of the same date. Judgment by default was given in the following civil cases: W. S Birdsall v H Hughes, £1 16s (costs 14s); W S. Birdsall v R McMillan. £5 16s 2d (£1 10s 6d). In a tenement case. J. B Sadd v. W J. Nixon judgment by default for £97 9s 10d was given and an order made for possession on or before 11th March.
