“CEILING” INCREASED
AMERICAN NATIONAL DEBT [U.P.A.-By Electric Telegraph-Copyright) WASHINGTON, 10th February. The House of Representatives approved and sent to the Senate a Bill increasing the “ceiling” of the national debt to 65,000,000,000 dollars. The Secretary of the Treasury, Mr Morgenthau, estimated that this would meet the financial requirements till June, 1942. The Appropriations Committee sent to the House a Bill providing 62,193,000 dollars for coastguard defence and neutrality duties, which is an increase of 18,959,000 over last year. The coastguard programme includes 5,121,000 dollars for increases in personnel 1,500,000 dollars for providing searchlights, anti-aircraft guns, machineguns, and gas masks. The committee stated: “In company with our defence programme for building up the navy it has become necessary to improve, alter and equip coastguard vessels suitable for operation with the navy to enable them to fulfil that duty when called on.” Mr Wendell Willkie has accepted an invitation to report personally to President Roosevelt after he testifies before the Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate to-morrow.
