CAMPS NEAR TARGETS
BRITISH WOMEN IN FRANCE LONDON, 18th January. British women of all ages who were rounded up by the Germans in occupied France are reported to have been sent to concentration camps near military objectives which are frequent targets of the Royal Air Force. The Madrid correspondent of the “Daily Mail” alleges that the sites of some camps were specially chosen near bases, such as Lorient. It is stated that detention was at first applied only to men of military age. Young boys and older men were prisoners on parole; but in December the measure was generalised, and boys over 14 years of age and men of all ages were taken, first to prison, and then to concentration camps. The measure was made applicable to women on sth December, and it included women of French birth who are married to Englishmen. In most cases only an hour’s warning was given, and the women were taken away with only 301 b of luggage.
