“GO TO IT!”
PRISONERS WORK OVERTIME (From a Special Correspondent) LONDON, 2nd November. Three thousand prisoners in British gaols have joined forces with factory workers in obeying Herbert Morrison’s appeal to “Go to it.” They are working “overtime” to produce vital products for the war effort, with extra food as a reward for their work. Sandbags. camouflage nets, gas mask cases, fenders for shipping, and cartridge boxes are among the articles turned out by the thousand. A prisoner who had recently been released from one of the gaols said this week: “We have been working hard voluntarily for some months, and I can say that everyone has been glad to help the war effort. I think they would work overtime even if there was no inducement of extra food. Women prisoners in Holloway, London, have been turning out mailbags, while in other prisons army kitbags and some small parts for machines are being produced. “The only objectors were one or two I.R.A. inmates,” said the ex-prisoner, “and the others soon gave the objectors an idea of their feelings.”
