BOY’S PROMPT ACTION
MAN RESCUED FROM DROWNING [United Press Association] TAURANGA, 31st December. A gallant rescue by a Wellington College student, John Edward Haast, saved a young man, Ross Patton, from drowning at Tokaanu to-day Patton, diving from the wharf, landed heavily on his stomach and was in immediate distress. A companion went in fully clothed to render assistance, but through fatigue was forced to abandon his effort. Haast then dived into 12ft of water and brought Patton to the surface. Miss Joyce Haast assisted her brother to bring the young man to the wharf, where he recovered. But for the prompt action of Haast ■ tragedy would have occurred.
