DEFEAT OF NIGHT RAIDERS
NEW METHOD FOUND STATEMENT BY AIR MARSHAL IN OPERATION SOON [U.P.A.-By Electric Telegraph-Copyright] LONDON, 31 at December. A message from Ottawa states that Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, the British air representative, when en route to Washington to confer on the standardisation of aircraft equipment, said: “A method has been found to defeat the German night raiders. I confidently believe it won’t be long before all the weight and sting are taken from the nightbombing attacks.’* He added that the equipment for the new method was rapidly being completed, and he expected that the worst of the night bombing would be over by the spring. BRITAIN’S AIR STRENGTH In London a high Air Force official stated that Britain’s air strength is considerably stronger than when the German invasion plans were broken up last September. All the losses have been made up and the actual number of reserve aircraft has increased. The Air Ministry report that more than 3500 German warplanes were destroyed over Britain and round her shores during 1940. Of these 3090 were shot down by fighters and the remainder by anti-aircraft guns, the balloon barrage and other defence forces.
The Royal Air Force in 1940 lost 1050 planes. Four hundred of the pilots were saved.
