AUCKLAND BEAT WANGANUI

EXCITING FINISH TO MATCH WINNING HIT ON THE STROKE OF TIME WANGANUI, 31st December. One wicket was the margin by which the Auckland touring cricket team beat the Wanganui representative team on Cook’s Gardens to-day, after a two-day match. The finish was one of the most exciting seen on the ground. When Wanganui had 205 runs on the board in the second innings for the loss of eight wickets, the Wanganui captain, F. W. Gilligan, declared, leaving Auckland two and a half hours, excluding the afternoon tea adjournment, in which to make 225 runs. With four minutes to stumps Auckland still required 15 runs, and the not-out batsmen, M. Metge and G. Childs, went for the bowling. As the clock was striking six in the last over, Metge pulled a straight ball to the boundary for the winning hit. It was a fitting finish to a fine game. OTAGO V. SOUTHLAND DUNEDIN, Ist January. In a cricket match against Southland, which began to-day. Otago made 213 runs (Duncan 64, Robertson 43, Knight 35, Smith 28; Overton 4 for 71, Fraser 4 for 68).
