HAND-KNITTED SOCKS

| APPRECIATED BY MEN IN MIDDLE EAST I KHAKI SHORTS A USEFUL GIFT ! Appreciation of home-knitted socks is expressed by a New Zealand officer with the Middle East forces who writes I to a friend in Nelson as follows: I “Those of us who are fortunate enough jto have home-knitted socks find them I very comfortable for route marches, the j issue ones being very hard on the men whose feet are tender. Speaking of ! socks, what happens to the hundreds of j pairs the good women in New Zealand knit for the troops? It is rumoured here that they are sent to a central store in Wellington, under the Red Cross Society, and there carefully packed away, for use in the next war. ; which according to the law of averages should come about in 25 years after this one finishes. Of course by that time the army will be more mechanised than ever and socks of asbestos will be needled— the Bren Carrier is hot enough on a regular warm day. “The local patriotic society could do any boys coming to Egypt a good turn by presenting them with a pair of khaki shorts. They would be wonderful for the sea voyage, and useful as a spare pair here, where two pairs are issued. They should be self-supporting and cut wide —24ins—at bottom and have an attached belt and buckle at the waist. T!ie length should be 2in above the knee cap. By the way, the holdall presented to ur by the Rotary Club was a splen- | didlv useful gift and is being made good i use of.”
