“NOT A BASTION”
REASON FOR DEFENCE OF BARDIA (Received 30th December, 12.20 p.m.) LONDON, 29th December. Signor Ansaldo, director of Count Ciano’s newspaper “II Helegrafo." declared in Rome that Bardia was not
a bastion as the British claimed. Its desperate resistance was explained by reasons of morale and because the soldiers are irritated by the enemy boasting after the capture of Sidi Barrani. The Italians also regard the port as a prop during the fluctuations | and fortunes of the war in Libya, j An Italian communique reports increased artillery and patrol activity ion the Bardia front and claims that j lightning Italian columns manoeuvring in co-operation with the Air Force destroyed some British armoured cars.
