FIRE AT MCKAY’S
The heat from a fire in the backyard of W. McKay and Son’s drapery shop, Bridge street, set a thermostat off on Saturday night, and gave the alarm to the Nelson Fire Brigade at 8.28 o’clock. A pile of boxes and rubbish had caught alight in the backyard and slightly scorched the back of the building.
One of the automatic sprinklers in McKay’s shop came into operation, thus preventing the fire from spreading, while the Brigade, running out one lead of hose, soon extinguished it.
