ARCHAEOLOGY
MR BURNHAM’S ADDRESS ’ 1 Another large audience greeted Mr | Burnham when he gave an interesting j address on recent discoveries in the : East and their relation to the Scriptures. "In the East, ’ said Mr Burnham, “a favourite word is ‘mareish,’ whcih signifies It doesn’t matter,’ and this shows ; thrir usual attitude. When their house la 11s down or is destroyed they just say nareish’ and build another on top. This attitude of mind assists the archaeol- : ogist, as the people do not resent hav- ; ing their land disturbed and their monuments, stones and tables unearthed and removed. ‘Because of recent discoveries many hundreds of books criticising the statements of Genesis have had to be withdrawn and every fresh discovery more and more goes to prove the absolute inerrancy of Scripture and to establish the facts as given in the earlier chapters of Genesis. The late Lord Kelvin wrote The science of the Bible is not ' erroneous,’ and the names were given of many scientists who have been compelled to acknowledge that the first chapters of Genesis and science are in ■ accord. For many years the higher (?) I critics stated that writing was not! known in the time of Moses, who could 1 not therefore have written the books I attributed to him. Recent discoveries h nave confirmed the fact beyond the' l shadow of a doubt that the science of I writing was known before the flood, and late aiseoveries show that in Ur of the L laldees a thousand years before Abra- i ham was born there the children were j being taught square root and other ' ( toims of higher mathematics. Not only j ev’dence, but written accounts of the , : Mood have recently been unearthed in j babvlon and elsewhere. Evolution has received its death blow and no true ' scientist now holds this theory. Many pictures of monuments, pottery, tablets, scarabs implements, etc., were shown establishing a high state of civilisation. Daggers and other steel instruments I have been found of a hardness that if | the method could be rediscovered it would be worth millions, and brass so | hard that it is impossible to mark it with a diamond.” The address was most interesting and goes to strengthen the belief in the solidity and accuracv | of the Word of God.” Mr Burnham will give another lantern; 'lecture this Saturday. showing even i more amazing discoveries in Palestine and Babylonia.
