RECITAL OF CHRISTMAS CAROLS
BY NELSON CATHEDRAL CHOIR There was a good attendance at the Nelson Cathedral last night to hear a recital of Christmas carols by the Cathedral Choir. The organist and choirmaster was Mr H. S. Claughton. and the Dean, the Very Rev. P. B. Haggitt, presided. An offertory was taken, the proceeds being for a Christmas gift fund for St. Andrew’s Orphanage children. The following programme was given: Process. Prelude. “Venite Emmanuel" • Dr. C. Harris): Choral Introit, "O Gladsome Light” (Sir A. Sullivan). Selections from the unfinished Oratorio, “Christus” (Mendelssohn): <a) Recit. “When Jesus was born in Bethelem”; (b) Male Voice Trio, “Say, where is he born"; (c) Choral, “As bright the Star of Morning Gleams." Soloists: Mrs Claughton, Messrs K. Farmer, G. Newton and L. Bourne. Anthem, “I Love to Hear the Story’’ •M. B. Foster). Soloist: Miss Jean Penney; Junior Choristers and the Choir. Organ, “Cradle Song” (G. Lange). Three Carols, (a) “Carol. Sweetly Carol”; (b) “When Christ was Born”; •c) “We three Kings”; Soloists: Mrs Watson, Misses Penney and Fawcett. Messrs Newton. Bourne.' Richards and Murdock. Part Song. “Nazareth” (Chas. Gounod). Soloist, Mr L. Bourne and Choir. Carol from St. John’s Eve (Sir Fred. Cowen): “Three Kings once Lived.” (Choral Refrain), “Star of Bethlehem, lead the way”; soloist, Mrs H. S. Claughton., Solo (baritone). “Legend,” (Tschaikowsky): “A Child there lived in Nazareth,” soloist, Mr L. Bourne.
