RIWAKA

ST. BARNABAS CHURCH GARDEN PARTY Members of St. Barnabas Church Ladies' Guild held their annual garden party at the Riwaka School on Saturday. In beautiful surroundings and favoured with perfect weather conditions the guests, who were received by Mrs C. Thomas, spent a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. The stalls, laden with attractive wares, were well patronised also the competition for weight of cake, with Mrs W. Thomas in charge. Prior to the dispensing of afternoon tea in the schoolroom the Rev P. Kirkham extended a welcome to all. He thankee the members of the ladies guild for the work they had done in preparation for the garden party and in addition those who had helped the ladies’ guild. Sincere thanks were also expressed to Mr J. Goodyer for the use of his beautiful school grounds for the function. Mesdames C. Tuibury, J. Goodyer, D. Mickell, L. Goodall, C. Jenkins and Mitcheil dispensed a delicious afternoon tea. Stalls and stallholders were:—Produce. Mrs F. G. Painter; sewing. Mesdames O. C. Wilkinson and Hubert Fry; cake Mesdames C. Barnett and G. Cookstrawberries and cream. Misses G. Thomas and L. Wilkinson: mystery parcels. Mrs G. Atkins. The opening of the mystery parcels at the close of the afternoon caused much speculation and interest and pro\ed quite an entertainment for both children and grown-*ups. Mrs W. J. Stevens was the winner of the Christmas cake (7!bs £oz) correct weight 71 bs liozs. Proceeds from the party will go to augment the church funds.
