BYRD’S EXPEDITION
NORTH STAR EXPECTED TO CALL AT DUNEDIN [United Press Association] DUNEDIN, 2nd December. Advice has been received in Dunedin that one of the United States Antarctic service expedition ships is expected to pay a visit to Dunedin about Christmas or New Year. No details are included in the communication which has come to hand, but it is assumed that the visitor will be the North Star, which under the command of Admiral R. E. Byrd, called at Dunedin on New Year’s day 12 months ago before proceeding south to join the other expedition vessel, the Bear of Oakland. It is believed that the purpose of the call is to pick up a quantity of supplies which came to hand too late to be loaded when the expedition went south the first time. When Admiral Byrd was in Dunedin last January he stated that the expedition intended to be away for 18 months with the possibility of a considerable extension of time in the event of finance being made available by the United States Government. Subsequent news messages, however, have indicated that this was not likely to be the case, and it now appears probable that the leader of the expedition, who has been back in America for some time, is going south again for the purpose of bringing away the main body of explorers and their equipment.
