£4OO FOR LONDON

AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION GIFT [United Press Association] WELLINGTON, This Day. ! A decision to give £4OO for the relief of distress in London and £IOO for the benefit of merchant seamen, was made by the executive of the Automobile Association (Wellington) last night. The finance committee reported that the Minister of Finance had definitely declined the association’s request for forwarding the sum of £4OO (sterling) to the Automobile Association in London for payment to the Lord Mayor’s Relief Fund. The Minister f Finance, however, had pointed out that because of the urgency of the need for funds in London, the sum of £IOO.OOO was remitted by the National Patriotic Fund Board, but the collections received to date by the National Patriotic Fund Board for the purpose were substantially less than £IOO,OOO. In those circumstances the committee recommended that £4OO New Zealand currency be paid to the National Patriotic Fund Board. An appeal had been received from the Apostleship of the Sea, the object of which is the entertainment and welfare of seamen. The committee felt that if a payment were made to it. a similar contribution should be j made to the Mission to Seamen. The committee recommended that £IOO i which was approximately the cost cf | transmitting £4OO sterling overseas, be ! ; divided between those organisations, i The committee’s proposal was adopted
