AURORA SAILING CLUB

SATURDAY’S RACES TAURANGA AND COMBINED CLASS On Saturday afternoon the Aurora Sailing Club held two races, one for the Tauranga class and one for a combined class. For the Tauranga class race the conditions were unfavourable there being only a very light nor’wester and a strong ebb-tide. The following boats and skippers faced the starter at 2.15 p.m. : Mawi (M. Miller), Jaffa <R. Samuel). Kipper (W. Bean). Scoot <G. Nalder). M.C. (H. Saunders). Brat (G. McConchie). Pipi (G. Cullen), Tiki <R. Potton), Deryn (R. Westrupp) and Kia Ora (I. McConchie). Scoot got away first closely followed by M.C. with the rest in a bunch. There was a lot of changing places on the beat up to the wharf, and on reaching the northern end of the wharf Kia Ora came out to take up the lead from M.C. very closely followed by Scoot. Between the leg from the wharf to the top buoy Kia Ora worked out a good lead and Scott passed M.C. A lot of other boats stood out into the tide and lost valuable ground in consequence. On the run down the harbour M.C. again caught and passed Scott and Tiki and Kipper caught Dei-yn. On the beat up to the finishing line Kipper and Tiki passed Deryn, and the order at the finishing line was Kia Ora 1, M.C. 2, Scott 3, followed by Tiki, Deryn. Jaffa. Mawi, and Pipi. ®Brat withdrew on the run down the harbour. When the handicaps were deducted the result was: Scott 1. M.C. 2, Kia Ora 3. All skippers are urged again to put their respective numbers on their mainsails as soon as p <sible.

COMBINED CLASS Only two boats entered the race for the Combined Class: Tainui (J. Chapman) and Te Ruru (G. Foster) sailed by A. Dobson. With the light weather and a spring ebb tide racing conditions for heavier boats were poor, and several did not race for this reason. Tainui led in the first round by a small margin but increased her lead in the second by several minutes. Te Ruru, however,* saved her time to win (on handicap) by one minute from Tainui. on the shortened course. Tainui has lodged a protest against Te Ruru for a breach of sailing rules. This will be heard on Thursday night at a meeting ; of the committee. COMMITTEE MEETING On Thursday night a committee meeting will be held at the clubhouse, i All Tauranga class members are asked to be present, as the National Contest Elimination trials will be under discussion. These races will be com- j menced as soon as possible. All mem- ' bers of this class wishing to enter must j hand in their names on Thursday night. Protests will be heard and rac- | ing arranged for the next fortnight. j CRUISING YACHTS A valuable addition to the Nelson cruising fleet, the Gypsy, has arrived in Nelson and is to make this her home port. Gypsy is a 27ft over all, a Bermudian rigged sloop. Her owner, Mr Dickson, has taken up his residence in Nelson and he and Mrs Dickson are living on board. Gypsy’s rig and appointments are perfect in every detail, and she is indeed a lovely little ship. She has ample accommoda* ton for two people and boasts a coal stove and every comfort below decks. On deck she is a rigger's dream, with evei - 3'thing beautifully carried out and in shining order. She has no auxiliary power, depending entirely on her sails and she certainly looks slippery enough to “go to windward up a ditch.’’ Mr Dickson has been cordially welcomed and is to become a member of the Aurora Sailing Club. All hands wish him good cruising in Tasman Bay with his pretty litt’.e vessel.
