DEATH OF M. CHIAPPE
OFFICIAL CONFIRMATION (U.P.A.-By Electric Telegraph-Copyrightj VICHY, 30th November. I It is officially confirmed that the • plane carrying the new High CommisjSioner, M. Chiappe, to Syria was lost | on 27th November with all occupants. A British fighter machine-gunned it | during a British and Italian naval enj gagement midway between Sardina and i the African coast. The plane was an Air France liner of the Farman type. It sent out an SOS at 12.6 p.m„ saying it had been hit and was on fire. Air and sea searches were fruitless, but pieces of wreckage, including an apparently unused lifeboat marked Air France, was later recovered. There was another passenger in the plane besides M. Chiappe.
