THE SPARROW
(Selected) A gay little sparrow sat on the fence, Just outside my window to-day, He ruffled his feathers, then smoothed them again, And hopped around in a saucy way. As I watched all his quaint little antics, I wondered how long he would stay, Very softly I opened the window, Lest frightened he might fly away. Quietly I scattered some crumbs on the path. He watched me with head on one side. Then skirmished about and quickly flew down. Very soon those crumbs were inside. Cleo Warren, Takaka.
