IMPRESSED BY DEAL

GIVING U.S. RIGHT TO LEASE BASES MOST IMPORTANT THING SINCE PANAMA MR MORGENTHAU RETURNS FROM TOUR [U.P.A.-By Electric Telegraph-Copyright] Received 29th Nov., 10.30 a.m. WASHINGTON, 28th Nov. Mr Henry Morgenthau, Secretary to the Treasury said that the question of the United States taking over British possessions in the Western Hemisphere should not be considered until the British exhaust their liquid assets. Making his first statement after his return from an inspection of the United States bases in the Caribbean he declared he was tremendously impressed by the deal giving the United States the right to lease bases which was possibly the most important thing since the leasing of the Panama Canal. STILL HAS LARGE RESERVES (Received 29th November, 12.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, 28th November. Mr Morgenthau said: “Britain has no reason to consider selling her possessions to raise cash.”

He indicated that Britain still had large reserves of cash and negotiable securities in the Western Hemisphere.
