PRICE OF MEAT

THREE REDUCTIONS TO BE MADE [United Press Association] CHRISTCHURCH, 25th October. A reduction of a halfpenny per lb in the retail price of meat will be made on Ist November and two similar reductions will be made on Ist December and Ist January, according to an announcement made by the Minister for Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, to-day. “Two increases in the retail price of meat have been made in recent months,” said the Minister. “The first was of id a lb on Ist July, and the other was of Id a lb on 20th August. It is common knowledge that it costs more to fatten cattle during the winter, and it is, therefore, only just that farmers should be compensated for this extra cost. At the time these increases were approved it was arranged that as the position eased there should be a gradual return to normal summer prices, and accordingly three reductions will be made in the next three months ” Some districts, notably Auckland, naa already made reductions in the retail price where the weather had been favourable, and where this had been done the reduction would not be made on Ist November.
