OUTSPOKEN PROTEST
j PAYMENT OF SECRETARY OF PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE WANGANUI APPOINTMENT
[United Press Association] I PALMERSTON N., This Day. Outspoken protest at the decision ol the Wellington Patriotic Council a 1 granting a Wanganui request to appoini a secretary at £5 a week was voicec by Mr Mansford, chairman of the Palmerston North zone committee at s : meeting here. j He said that at the Wellington meet-
ing he had spoken strongly against the appointment in view of the fact thal other places had secretaries who were doing similar work gratis. Even the provincial secretary in Wellington was doing such work just for out-of-pocket expenses. Surely Wanganui could find some gentleman imbued with sufficient patriotic motives to do the work needed without payment. When he had thus spoken at the Wellington meeting Wani ganui’s reply was that they wanted the | work done well, but he had assured the i Wanganui delegates that the work was j being done well in other centres withj out remuneration. However, the counj cil had approved of the appointment , and had passed a resolution asking the Press not to report the matter. | “I told them that would not stop me from voicing what I thought about it,” added Mr Mansford. “It is not fair to other secretaries who are prepared to work out of a patriotic motive. The salary must come out of funds intended for soldiers. I am hoping the Government will take action.” It was decided to give notice of motion that the decision be rescinded at the next Wellington meeting.
