GRAVE DANGER
NEED FOR SOLID FRONT WASHINGTON, 23rd October. The United States Under-Secretary of State, Mr Sumner Welles, spoke at Baltimore this evening about the defences of the Americas. Addressing the American nation, Mr Welles said: “This is a moment of grave danger and we must be prepared for such sacrifices as our common interests require.”
The defence of the United States, he said, involved that country’s ability to repel an attack against, or an attempted invasion of any part of the New W orld.
Recent years had made it more than ever clear that the Panama area could not be rendered secure, nor their own territory regarded as safe from an invasion by air, unless the territory of their neighbours to the south was equally secured. That could not be achieved without the loyalty and friendship of other American Powers.
There was never a time, he said, when there was such need for a solid front in face of the so-called “new orders” on the Continent.
