NELSON WEST TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD MONTHLY MEETING AND CIRCLE REPORTS TALK ON CACTI The Nelson West Townswomen’s Guild held its monthly meeting in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Waimea street, when there was a record attendance of members. Mrs Gustavel (president) presided and welcomed all present. She then dis- ; cussed briefly present and future patriotic efforts The funds from recent efforts have enabled the Guild to purchase and despatch 79 soldiers’ Christmas parcels. Guild members are on duty each week at the G.P.0.. also selling soldiers’ boxes. At the conclusion of business. Mr Gourlay, of the Cawthron Institute, was introduced as the speaker for the afternoon. and greatly interested his audience with a talk on cacti growing, their culture, uses, and various characteristics. He read an interesting article which explained clearly the various groups and peculiarities of the cacti. A wonderful collection of seedlings and plants in different stages of growth, accompanied and illustrated the talk, as did also a colourful dish of cacti fruit, which were afterwards sampled and enjoyed by members. An invitation to view the collection of plants and blooms at Mr Gourlay's home was gratefully accepted. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker for his interesting talk, and thoughtfulness in including such a display. Afternoon tea served by the hostesses, Mesdames Davey. Kenning. Flower, Kerr and Davies was supervised by the tea hostess. Mrs O'Donnell. CIRCLE REPORTS Handicraft Circle.—Throughout the month there has been a very good attendance of members. This circle is still growing, and new members will be very welcome. Musical Circle—Three well-attended meetings have been held during the month. More glees have been practised. and items for the Christmas party are well in hand. Play-reading Circle —Members of this circle are very busy practising and rehearsing their parts for the Christmas party. t Gardening Circle. —The circle held its monthly meeting in the circle rooms, when the gardening notes for October were read by Mrs Harley. The “best flower in my garden" was won by Mrs Dayman with a beautiful tulip. An invitation to visit his garden was extended by Mr Martin, of Grove street, and accepted with pleasure. Bridge Circle.—This circle is a very keen and active one. Further soldiers’ parcels have been purchased, and another donation made to Guild funds. METHODIST WOMEN’S AUXILIARY The Methodist Women's Missionary Auxiliary celebrated its 21st anniversary this month. At an afternoon gathering members and friends indulged in happy reminiscence and officials past and present took part either by letter or in person. The customary cake with its 21 candles was a feature of the function. Later the members, assisted by friends, presented a pageant entitled “The Masque of Noble Women,” when some of those who have influenced the history of England were impersonated in the costume of their day. This formed a novel and instructive entertainment, and a fitting climax to the coming of age celebrations.
