AREA COMMANDERS SELECTED WEST COAST APPOINTMENTS The appointments of area commanders for the Home Guard in Hamilton, Wanganui, Palmei'ston Noi'th, Westport and Greymouth were announced last evening by the Minister of National Service, the Hon. R. Semple. They are as follow: Area No. 98, Headquarters, Westpoi't.—Flight Lieutenant Hugh Douglas Hamilton, company director. Westport Flight Lieutenant Hamilton served with the N.Z.E.F. fi'om 1914 to 1916, w.':h the Mounted Rifles in Egypt and Gallipoli. With the rank of corporal he was transferred to the Royal Flying Coi’ps, with which unit he later gained his commission, and rose to the rank of Flight Lieutenant. For his service with the Royal Flying Corps he was mentioned in dispatches. In civilian life Flight Lieutenant Hamilton is managing director of Bailee and Company, Westport. He is president of the local Returned Soldiers’ Association. (Flight Lieutenant Hamilton is an old Nelson boy.) Area No. 9A, Headquarters. Greymouth. Bi'igadier-Genei'al William Meldrum. C. 8.. C.M.G., D. 5.0.. retired magistrate. Brigadiei'-General Meldrum served during the last war from 1914 to 1919, leaving New Zealand with the Main Body in command of the Wellington Mounted Rifles. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli, and Palestine, and was eventually appointed'to command the N.Z. Mounted Rifles Brigade. In addition to receiving the C. 8.. C.M.G., D. 5.0.. and the Order of the White Eagle of Serbia, he was three times mentioned in dispatches, and his name was forwarded to the Seci'etai'y of State for War, for distinguished and gallant service throughout the campaign. He has taken a prominent part in the oi'ganisation of the R.S.A. on the West Coast.
