REPORTS

FINANCE COMMITTEE The Finance Committee reported and recommended:— As to the disposal of surplus stocks of iai : (a) That enquiries be made from the Christchurch Gas Company and other gas supply authorities as to the possibility of their requiring supplies of tar. (b) That the City Engineer be instructed to report on the proposal to install a tar distilling plant. As to the Council insurances: That consideration be deferred to the end of the financial year when the position of the General Account will be ascertained. RESERVES COMMITTEE The Reserves Committee reported and recommended as follows : As to the Superintendent's report on proposed works, etc.: (a) That application be made for authority to carry ou, (he following works with Scheme 13 labour: Development of Britannia Heights, Queen’s Drive and the slope opposite the fernerv in the Botanical Reserve. (b> That the Superintendent be instructed to submit a report on the possibilities of development work at the Sands Reserve, (c) That the Mayor be requested to interview the owner of -he land at the junction of Vanguard street with Waimea street with a view to the removal of the fences and the beautifying of the area, (d) That the Superintendent in consultation with the City Engineer, submit a report on the possibility of effecting improvements in Lower Russell street, (e) That the matter of the use of bicycles in the Old Cemetery be referred to the Traffic Inspector for suitable action. CITY ENGINEER The City Engineer (Mr C. I. Kidson) reported as follows for the month : Streets and Footways.—Approximately half a mile of Vanguard street has been resurfaced and the new equipment employed has been quite successful. Owing to the rough state of this road, however, it is that this topdressing will be very satisfactory and may require further work in a few years’ time. The portion of the road at the Camping Ground, Brook street, Poynter’s Crescent and portions of Mjunt street Queen's road and Washington Valley have been primed. The work on the footpaths within the City block has been completed. Quarry.—Material for sealing work during the summer is being prepared as before.

Transport.—Petrol consumption' during the month of September has been kept within 80 per cent, of the licensed quantity. Drainage.—The pumping station at

Water.—The installation of meters toi various Government departments has been carried out as the meters arrive. Work for Other Departments.—The remaining portions of Golf road and Muritai street were primed for the Tahunanui Town Board. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER The Electrical Engineer (Mr E. Fleming) reported for the period ending 24th October as follows : City applications 3613 (increase 9); city extensions 8540 (increase 30); total 12,153 (increase 39). Lighting load ap-Pl-ed for 2265 k.w. (increase 6 k.w.); heating load applied for 7371 k.w. (increase 25 k.w.); power load applied for 2776 k.w. (increase 13 k.w.); total, 12,412 k.w. (increase 44 k.w.w).

Numbers 3 and 4 boilers have been opened up and cleaned. The inspection by the Marine Department has been completed and the boilers are under steam again.

A tube in No. 3 boiler was condemned and has been replaced with a new tube. We had to obtain extra power from the Stoke Diesel plant on Friday night when No. 3 boiler was out of commission. No. 2 boiler is now opened up for inspection.

A number of cross-arms on the 3300 volt and 400 volt lines which were erected approximately 16 years ago in Brook street are showing signs of natural decay. We are replacing these with new tallow wood. A number of white grubs were found in the decayed timber. Upon further investigation we find these are the grub of the ordinary beetle. The staff are now finishing off the 11 k.v. line in Nile street.

We are extending the 400 volt linos long Motueka street to feed the new Government houses.

GASWORKS RETURNS The Nelson City Gasworks returns for Seotember were as follows .-—Coal carbonised, 401 tons: gas manufactured per ton of coal. 16.586 cubic feet: gas manufactured. 6.651.300 cubic feet. Coke produced during month. 5213 bags. Tar supplied to General Account. 4932 gallons: sold to public, 5312 gallons. Tar in hand, 34,8224 gallons. Value of residuals sold during month. £516 17s 3d.
