THE NAVY

PREPARED TO DEFEND U.S. TERRITORY 1 : MORAL OBLIGATION TO SOUTH AMERICA REALM WASHINGTON, 23rd October. Colonel Knox stated that the United States Navy was prepared to defend any territory under the American flag. The United States had a moral obligation to help the South American realm.

The statement was a reply to qiitestions concerning the navy’s intention of defending the Philippines and other outlying Pacific Islands, like Guam, Wake, and Midway. Colonel Knox said the navy had no plans at present to send part of the fleet on a goodwill expedition to Australia or Singapore. He said work had begun at Newfoundland, where the United States was locating a flyingfield and a naval base on the south side of the island.
