FIRE IN TAKAKA

BOWLING CLUB’S PAVILION DESTROYED The Takaka Bowling Club’s pavilion in Hiawatha Lane was totally destroyed by fire last night. The alarm was given at about 11.15 p.m.. and the Takaka Volunteer Fire Brigade, under Capt. W. Birdsall. was promptly on the scene, but when they arrived the flames had complete charge and it was impossible to save either the building or any of its contents. Several hundred people turned out in the rain to watch the progress of the fire. The Bowling Club and many of its members will be heavy losers as a result of the fire, because the building housed the club’s lockers and practically all of its equipment, including two lawn mowers, a number of sets of bowls, mats, seats, discs and several sets of bowls belonging to individual members. It is estimated that the total loss in building and equipment will be appi oximately £ 200. The loss is the more unfortunate in view of the fact that the club’s opening day is to take place on Saturday next. The building was an old structure, but tlje club had recently expended approximately £2O on repairs, and the building was in the process of being given a coat of paint in readiness for the coming season.

There was a small amount of insurance on the pavilion, details of which are not at present available.
